Greg Smith, Educator
Whether coaching a competitive VEX Robotics team or looking at incorporating a cost effective robotics platform into your in school or afterschool program this session is for you. We will use a VEX Robotics Competition (VRC) event as a background for designing, building and programming VEX Robots. After taking a brief look at the VRC program we will dive into what makes good drive trains, arms and manipulators. To get familiar with construction and programming techniques you will build a robot and use this as a platform for programming in RobotC. In addition to developing programs for autonomous and driver-controlled periods, we will explore RobotC’s ‘Virtual Worlds’ to see how they can be used for training and reinforcement of programming ideas. We will finish of the week by porting your programs into a competition template and run a simplified version of a VEX Tournament. As there is time and interest we can cover team management strategies, fund raising ideas, VEX grants and implementing an engineering design cycle for your team(s). Although we will have a couple of VEX kits we can let you use at the conference, please bring your own kit and a laptop if at all possible. We will be using RobotC for Cortex with the corresponding Virtual Worlds.
Greg Smith is a veteran FTC and VRC robotics coach and is currently the commissioner for VEX Robotics Competitions in Oregon.
