Teaching Game Design and Development

Interested in teaching game design as part of your in-school or afterschool class or club? Join us examining different game engines and tools that enable students to create their own computer games. No programming experience is necessary or required. Curriculum materials will be provided and shared. Attendees will be given ample time to develop and/or refine their own curriculum. Attendees with expertise in this area are also invited and encouraged to share with the group and/or expand upon their curriculum. Attendees may choose to participate in a Professional Learning Community intended to support our collective work over the course of the school year; stipends are available on a first-come, first-served basis for those interested. Bring your personal and professional gaming in education goals, and we will provide the environment and dedicated time to meet your needs.

We will cover App Inventor, which is a Scratch-like programming language, then delve into Android Studio, which allows for complete development. Jason Galbraith started his career with a Master’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence, but then realized he enjoyed teaching more than research. After getting his teaching degree, he landed a job at Sunset High School, where he has been since 2007. In that time he has taught a huge variety of technology classes for all levels of students, from technology introductions for middle school students to college-level computer science classes. At Sunset, his classes include 3D modeling, video game creation, web design, robotics, Java programming, C++ programming, and data structures. Many of these classes are dual-credit with Portland State University and Portland Community College. He also coaches video game teams, mentors robotics teams, runs after-school clubs, and a girls-only technology camp. In his spare time, he helps teach for Saturday Academy, runs workshops for the OCSTA (Oregon Computer Science Teachers Association), and attempts to make a professional level computer Go player with Professor Peter Drake of Lewis & Clark College. LEGO Robotics

Are you interested in Robotics possibilities for your students? Using the popular LEGO system we will learn how to build simple robotic systems, including programming and access to various contests. This proven curriculum is best suited for grades 4 – 8 but has also been used in high schools with outstanding results. The JFLL and FLL Robotics contests will be explained and explored. No prior experience is necessary for beginners and for those with prior experience we will have advanced opportunities. The curriculum has web based supports that your students can access. Sensors and controls are everywhere around us. Learn how to engage your students with this exciting technology. We will discuss how LEGO parts can be used to help accomplish various standards and bring practical applications to your classroom. The instructor has extensive experience teaching LEGO robotics both during the school day and in afterschool environments. Note that although the FLL competition is for grades 4-9, the LEGO robotics kits can be used for engaged learning K-12 and beyond.

This class will explore FIRST(tm) Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics and how it can integrate into your 7-12 classroom or afterschool program. The use of mechanisms and programming will be taught. The FTC robotics competition and team development will be discussed. FTC rules have been evolving significantly. For those considering or involved in the FTC program this is a great opportunity to interact with fellow educators about how they are teaching robotics either during the school day or by using afterschool opportunities. The instructor has extensive FTC knowledge and experience.

In the meantime, his house was filling with robots due to his kids’ participation in FIRST(tm) LEGO League (FLL), and then FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC). Dale has been a stalwart support on the ORTOP tournament circuit as FTC Judge Advisor and FTC Field Tech Advisor. VEX Robotics

Whether coaching a competitive VEX Robotics team or looking to incorporate a cost effective robotics platform into your in school or afterschool program, this session is for you. This is a hands-on workshop where participants will get firsthand experience designing, building, driving and programming a robot using the VEX platform.  Participants will use the VEX ‘Virtual Worlds’ as well as the physical VEX kit to complete challenges that will build your confidence and ability. For the high fliers we will have a complete VEX  Robotics Competition (VRC) field for you to experience what competitive teams will face this fall.  Bring your own VEX Kit if you have one.  There will be a limited number of VEX kits available at the event.  Be sure to sign up and bring a friend.

Greg Smith is a veteran FIRST(tm) Tech Challenge (FTC) and VEX Robotics Competition (VRC) coach, and a long time teacher with a passion for helping students succeed. Currently, Greg teaches computer science, robotics and engineering courses at West Salem High School, while coaching an active VEX Robotics Competition (VRC) club of five to eight teams. In addition to competing, the Robotics Club also hosts competitions for elementary school, middle school and high school teams and they host an annual VEX Idea Factory for coaches to bring their teams to get some one-on-one help in preparing for competition. Wade Sims is a jack of all trades: licensed CTE teacher (9.5 years), science teacher (7.5 years), cabinet builder, finish carpenter, general handyman, fiber optic cable installer. He has a BS in Biology and Special Education, and a Masters in School Administration. Wade now teaches in Gaston, Oregon, which has a growing reputation for quality work that resulted in Wade’s invitation to join the SuperQuest faculty. Wade has taught junior high sciences, engineering, ecology, anatomy and physiology, biology, history, cabinetry, furniture, CAD, manufacturing and some architecture. Day 1, brought to you in partnership with code.org: After the impressive success of the Hour of Code, Code.org extended the activities into a complete K-5 curriculum. All the activities are developed by K-5 educators with an eye to engaging young learners. This course will be an introduction to aspects of the curriculum (including both the Online and Unplugged elements of the course). The materials are free, include detailed lesson plans (including ties to the standards) and really engage students! Come join us for a full day of Professional Development! (PS-We have swag bags!) . This is a bring your own device event…you will need it to test out the curriculum!

Day 2 focuses on grades 6-8, thanks to the Digital Promise Grant from ODE: In this session we will be expanding on themes and lessons from the original Code.org training you have attended this year (or the previous day)! In particular, we are going to look at updated and new lessons created by Code.org (including Course 4 and the Middle School Course offerings). We will continue the TLO model and also look at extensions outside of what is provided by Code.org (exploring iPad apps and board games that encourage programmatic thinking in students).

Chris Bartlo teaches Math and CS at Wilson High School in Portland, Oregon. He is excited about teaching Computer Science at the high school level, and is involved in a variety of initiatives that focus on connecting young people with technology and professionals in that area. Chris’ biggest projects right now are further developing a 4-year high school computer science curriculum, and working with the TAO foundation on the Innovation Academy project. Chris was one of the pilot teachers for the Exploring Computer Science curriculum.

Chris’ “fairly broad background” in professional, academic and educational fields supports developing interesting curriculum that is relevant to students. He still does occasional development work (making websites, designing financial models, etc.) as well as working on a few secret projects for his classroom.

Computational thinking – the logic of algorithms – is the heart of computer science and an essential skill for the 21st century. We will look at ways to expose non-coders to the beauty of algorithms and computer science and to broaden the perspective of students who already know how to code. Walk away with lessons that teach students about the algorithms that shape modern life and get hands on experience with a visual programming system that allows students to focus on learning logic instead of syntax. Agile Software Methodology

Learn how the pros develop software. Agile Development is a technique for enabling teams to produce high quality products that meet customer demands in a fixed amount of time. It is the most widely used software development methodology in the software industry. We will cover the essential aspects of Agile Development including customer collaboration, requirements analysis, team roles, self-organizing teams, work tracking, iterative development, usability testing, scrum meetings, retrospectives, and agile planning. We will provide examples of using Agile Development for a team of high school students competing in the Oregon Games Project Challenge. We will also cover an overview of some software tools to help with Agile Development.

Java Programming in Minecraft

This course uses the popular game, Minecraft, as a inspirational platform for game design programming. The class will use Java in the Eclipse IDE*. Attendees will learn how to program plugins that add creative changes to the Minecraft Game through a programming interface called Bukkit. Attendees should be familiar with Java as well as the game Minecraft. Detailed expertise in Minecraft can be provided by the end students. System setup instructions and a course outline will be provided.

Making the Most of Mobiles

Join this hands-on workshop and explore some practical techniques for using iPads/mobiles in a classroom setting. Topics include basic procedures, management issues, workflow options, classroom websites, LMSs (learning management systems), screencasts, digital book creation, game-based activities, student-response systems, and more. Customize the content to meet your own needs and help others in the process. Above all, walk away with some useful digital tools to start off the school year.

Chromebooks in Your Classroom

Chromebooks are the perfect tool for collaboration, content creation, and working with Google Apps in the classroom. This course will introduce participants to effectively using Chromebooks with students, focusing on integration, management, student engagement, and specific project examples. We will also explore Google Apps for Education, Google Classroom, Chrome apps, and Chrome extensions which can be useful in the classroom.

This course is for all teachers of all grade levels, and can be taken by anyone with basic knowledge of computers. Participants should have a Google account. Participants should bring a Chromebook, power cable, and ear buds. A limited number of Chromebooks will be available for check out, but please contact the instructors in advance.

Day 1:  Adventures in Gamifying

Learn the “why” and “how” so you can begin designing your gamified unit plan right away!

Day 2:  Theme & Game Design

Choose a theme and everything will start falling into place.  Brainstorm theme ideas and develop a basic framework for a gamified unit of study.  

Day 3: Game Mechanics

Learn how game mechanics can be incorporated to spark and maintain interest throughout the game.  You will have time to brainstorm game mechanic ideas so you can incorporate them into your gamified unit plan and be ready to start your game when school begins!

Intro to Web Design

This introductory course in web design focuses on development of websites that are efficient, easy to use, attractive, and fun. Beginning with Hyper-Text Markup Language (HTML), the course has basic programming skill development and methodologies, including HTML5, CSS3, and progresses to some basic Java Script.  Besides development of website analysis, design understandings, and design for Accessibility, it supports development of color, structure and design elements, aligned with industry standards. No prior experience is required, but basic browser and internet terms are helpful.  A full curriculum will be available for use, along with a walk through and development of a basic website for a class use.  This class could conform to local community college curriculum for high school college credit award; this option will be discussed in class, along with CTE potential, and resources for additional learning support.

This one-day workshop will focus on computer science apps, tools and curriculum geared toward 2nd-7th grade. We will be exploring visual block-based programs such as Hopscotch, Scratch, Tickle, and Ozoblockly, and other introductory programming devices. We will cover a creative ‘design-thinking’ approach to concepting, storyboarding, and developing interactive projects. This workshop will introduce lesson plans and project-based curriculum for the classroom. 

Coding can be exciting and confidence-building, and a skill that everyone can learn. The curriculum and programs we will be working with in this workshop are designed to inspire kids to become makers and bring their own ideas to life.   Please bring a laptop and/or iPad to the event.

This course will introduce you to Arduino components and programming, with a focus on exploration, skill-building, and the creation of useful devices for teachers to utilize in their classrooms.  Students will learn how to utilize an Arduino single-board computer to generate and measure data, how to effectively develop circuits to use sensors and motors, and how to write programs to control the functions of the Arduino components.
